Can You Have a Photo Booth Outside? Outdoor & Backyard Setup Rules (Toronto & GTA, 2026)
Yes — but outdoor photo booths have four hard requirements most people find out about the week of the event. Here is exactly what a booth needs from your backyard, tent, patio, or park venue across Toronto and the GTA: power, cover, level ground, and a rain plan.

Can you have a photo booth outside?
Yes — we set up outdoors regularly across Toronto and the GTA, as long as four conditions are met: a flat level surface, a standard 120V outlet within 15 feet, overhead cover such as a tent or canopy, and a plan for what happens if it rains. Miss any one of those and the booth either cannot run or runs badly.
None of these are unusual requests, and none of them cost extra. But they are the four things that turn a backyard wedding or a patio corporate mixer from "the booth was the highlight" into "the booth had to be moved into the garage at 7pm." Below is the complete outdoor checklist, written from what actually happens at real events — and what to sort out with your venue or your rental company before the day, not on the day.
What does an outdoor photo booth actually need from your yard or venue?
Four things: level ground, power within 15 feet, overhead cover, and enough clear floor space — 8×8 feet for a Mirror Booth or Magic Mirror, and 10×10 feet for the 360 Video Booth. Everything else we bring ourselves.
Taking those one at a time, because each has a real-world catch:
What happens to a photo booth in rain, heat, or humidity?
Rain and equipment do not mix, so the booth needs cover before it needs anything else — and heat is the underrated problem in a GTA summer. A tent solves both at once, which is why it is the single most useful thing you can arrange.
Rain is the obvious risk and the easiest to plan for. Heat is subtler. A booth sitting in full sun on a 30-degree Toronto afternoon gets hot enough that the screen dims to protect itself and prints come out of the printer soft. Shade fixes it entirely. Humidity matters for prints specifically — photo paper in very damp air takes longer to dry and can curl, so a covered, ventilated spot is better than an enclosed, muggy one.
The practical version of all this: put the booth under cover, out of direct sun, and somewhere air moves. That is it.
Do outdoor photo booths need a generator?
No — not for most setups. Our booths run on a standard 120V / 15A outlet, and we bring our own extension cord. A generator only comes into play at a venue with genuinely no power, such as a park, a farm field, or a remote property.
If your event is one of those, the generator is usually already on the rentals list for the caterer, the lighting, or the band, and the booth can share it. The thing to confirm is capacity, not existence — a small inverter generator already running a coffee urn and a sound system may not have headroom. Tell us the power situation when you book and we will tell you honestly whether it will hold. If a venue tells you "there's an outlet somewhere," verify it works and measure the distance before the day; a dead outdoor receptacle discovered at 5pm is a genuinely bad hour.
Can you run a 360 photo booth outdoors?
Yes, and outdoors is often where a 360 booth looks its best — but it needs 10×10 feet of properly flat ground and it is the least forgiving booth in wind. The camera arm sweeps a full circle, so anything uneven under the platform shows up as a wobble in the video.
The reason it works so well outside is the background. A 360 video booth does not use a backdrop — it captures whatever is behind your guests for the entire rotation. Outdoors at golden hour, with string lights, a tent, a sunset, or a lit patio behind them, the footage looks dramatically better than the same booth in a beige side room. Put it where the view is, not where there is spare space.
Two outdoor cautions specific to 360. First, wind: the platform and arm are stable, but loose decor, light drapes, and anything untethered nearby will end up in every clip. Second, dusk: once it gets genuinely dark, the booth relies on its own lighting, so the surroundings that made it look good in daylight fade out. Running the 360 during the late-afternoon and early-evening window, before full dark, gets the best of both. You can see real clips from GTA events in our event gallery.
What time of day is best for an outdoor photo booth?
Late afternoon into early evening — roughly the two hours before sunset and the hour after. You get soft natural light, the temperature has dropped, and guests have arrived and loosened up.
Midday is the weakest slot outdoors: harsh overhead sun, squinting, heavy shadows under eyes, and the most heat stress on the equipment. Full darkness is fine for the Mirror and Magic Mirror booths, which light their own subjects, but it flattens a 360's background. If you are choosing when to run a booth at a summer backyard wedding in Ajax or a patio event in Etobicoke, aim the start time so the peak of the rental lands in that golden-hour window. Our post on how many hours to book covers the timing side in more detail.
What does an outdoor photo booth cost in Toronto and the GTA?
Exactly the same as an indoor one — there is no outdoor surcharge. The Mirror Booth starts at $550 for 2 hours, the 360 Video Booth at $550 for 3 hours, and the Magic Mirror Booth at $800 for 2 hours. Setup, teardown, and an on-site attendant are included in every package.
The full ladder, straight from our pricing calculator:
The one cost that can change with an outdoor event is travel, and only by distance: there is no travel fee within 30 km of downtown Toronto, and beyond that we quote it upfront rather than surprising you. Backyard events out in Durham Region, cottage-country weddings, and rural venues are where that comes up. Everything else is on the services page.
Which outdoor venues and backyards work best across the GTA?
Tented backyards, covered patios, estate and farm venues with permanent structures, and rooftop terraces with a canopy — anywhere with a hard surface and a plug. These are the setups that need no extra planning at all.
Around the region, the patterns are fairly consistent. Backyard weddings and milestone parties through Ajax, Pickering, Whitby, and Oshawa almost always have a tent and a garage outlet, which is close to the ideal outdoor setup. Estate and farm venues north of the city in Vaughan, King, and Caledon usually have a permanent pavilion. Rooftop and terrace events in King West, Liberty Village, and the Distillery District are excellent when there is a canopy and a real challenge when there is not — the wind on a downtown rooftop is stronger than people expect. Park and conservation-area events across Scarborough, Markham, and Mississauga are the ones to plan hardest: check whether power exists at all, and whether the site requires a permit for a tent.
What should you tell your photo booth company before an outdoor event?
Five things: that it is outdoors, what the ground surface is, where the nearest outlet is, whether there is a tent, and what your rain plan is. Sending those five lines when you book prevents essentially every outdoor problem we have ever run into.
The rain plan is the one worth deciding early rather than in the moment. Have a named indoor backup location — a garage, a covered porch, a hall, a room inside the venue — and confirm the booth can physically fit there. We arrive an hour before your start time to set up and run test sessions, and setup never counts against your rental hours, so there is a real window to make the call before guests arrive. If the forecast turns on the day, the attendant makes the call with you rather than for you.
Beyond that, booking timing matters more than anything for summer outdoor dates. May through October weekends across the GTA fill 4 to 6 months out, and Saturdays go first — a $200 deposit holds the date with the balance due 14 days before, and cancelling 30 or more days out is a full refund. If you have an outdoor date in mind, price it on the calculator and tell us the venue; we will tell you what it needs before you are the one finding out.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a photo booth be set up outside?
Yes. We set up outdoors regularly, provided there is a flat level surface, a standard 120V outlet within about 15 feet, and overhead cover such as a tent, canopy, or covered patio to protect the equipment from sun and rain. There is no extra charge for an outdoor setup.
Does an outdoor photo booth need a tent?
Yes, or some equivalent overhead cover. Cameras, printers, and touchscreens are not weatherproof, and direct summer sun causes the screen to dim and prints to come out soft well before any rain becomes an issue. A gazebo, pergola, or covered patio works just as well as a rented tent.
Do you need a generator for an outdoor photo booth?
Not usually. Our booths run on a standard 120V / 15A household outlet and we bring an extension cord up to 25 feet, so a house, garage, or tent distribution outlet is enough. A generator is only needed at venues with no power at all, such as a park or farm field — and there, capacity matters more than availability.
Can you use a 360 photo booth outdoors?
Yes, and it often looks better outdoors because the 360 booth uses the surroundings as its background instead of a backdrop. It needs 10×10 feet of genuinely flat ground, and it works best in the late-afternoon to early-evening window before full darkness, when the background is still visible in the footage.
What happens if it rains on the day of an outdoor event?
Have a named indoor backup location decided in advance — a garage, covered porch, or room inside the venue — and confirm the booth footprint fits there. We arrive an hour before your start time, and setup and teardown never count against your rental hours, so there is a real window to move indoors before guests arrive.
Does an outdoor photo booth cost more in Toronto?
No. Outdoor and indoor pricing are identical: the Mirror Booth starts at $550 for 2 hours, the 360 Video Booth at $550 for 3 hours, and the Magic Mirror at $800 for 2 hours, all including setup, teardown, and an attendant. The only distance-related cost is travel beyond 30 km of downtown Toronto, which we quote upfront.
